Hello,

I'm Tom Finn, a Mechanical Eng. Graduate Student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Myself and two other students, George Venizelos and Ron Nipay, are working with Sam Chiappone to write a teaching module about machine communication on the factory floor. We're new to MTConnect, but think it has a lot of potential and we'd love to help.

What kind of things do you think it is important for students with an interest in manufacturing to know?

We're also working toward a real world application of this work, helping the Fayetteville Free Library to monitor the MakerBots in their innovative fab lab. Both RPI and Fayetteville have received helped from MacKintok and we'd like to help them back.

You're welcome to contact me via finnt [at] rpi.edu if you'd like to know more.

So far we're focusing on how to choose sensors and wire up the device, then how to pull information. We'll do this on a small scale, then explain how MTConnect can make this feasible for many tools with many sensors on a large scale.

If you have any ideas, comments, or suggestions I'd love to hear them!

Thomas,

I'm working on a MTConnect adapter for a Makerbot Replicator 2. My plan is to access "conveyor" which is the service Makerware uses to send commands to control the Makerbot. "Conveyor" is open sourced on github and is mostly written in Python. I'll keep you posted on my progress, and I'll setup a repo on github for the adapter once completed. Also, we have a Digitizer, maybe write an adapter for that as well Smile

Thanks

-Joel

Joel,

Wow sounds like a great project! I hadn't heard of Conveyor before, I'll look into it!

Great to hear you're using the standard for research. We developed a python adapter toolkit for the ROS project. It's buried in the project here:

https://github.com/mtconnect/ros_bridge/tree/master/mtconnect/mtconnect_ros_bridge/scripts/src

But if you would like, you can use it separately from the project. Has most of the MTConnect adapter stuff already done.

Contact me if you need any help... be happy.

Best,
Will Sobel

Tom,

I just posted this http://mtconnectforum.com/FindPost140.aspx on the Forum in another thread. We're working on a Python Agent and I thought it would be great to work on it and the MakerBot MTConnect adapter together.

Thanks,

-Joel

Hi Joel, very cool! I'm starting a new job and I'm no longer working on this project. We did introduce other students and several industry representatives to MTConnect, and the people from MacKintok are still working to measure the MakerBot. They would be a good group to collaborate with!

Be well,
Tom
