Hello Everyone,
does MTConnect have any possibility to write the values of variables (instead of just reading them)? Is there any possibility to call methods? This is the only trace I have found so far:

[...]
The protocol will be rolled out in three phases:
[...]
• In Phase Two, users will have the ability to write data that is being discovered and shared between devices. The host system would be "in charge" of sending out the queries between devices and monitoring what each is doing and what data each is collecting. This system will be able to control certain aspects of the CNC remotely including starting/stopping operations and providing setup information on parts, fixturing, tooling, etc.
[...]

Thanks in advance.

kppl,

Will Sobel is probably the best one to answer this, but I'll give it a shot. You can implement a read-read solution. The best example would be the MTConnect Ros Robot project, recently done by System Insights and Southwest Research Institute at NIST. Here is a video link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHzcgyi2DsQ

jdneidig,
thank you for your answer. I have read somewhere about this solution. It seems that it is only a workaround... I am wondering if there is (or will be) a dedicated method for writing values and calling methods...

Currently MTConnect is read-only and we are planning on keeping it read-only for a while since once we add write-back to the devices we will have to handle security and liability issues that will reduce our ability to progress on the development of the domain model. What is the problem you are working on? There may be another way to handle the interdevice communications without having to push data directly over. We have done this for bar feeders and robots.

The agent itself is capable of handling additional requests, we've just locked down the implementation so it was as close to 100% secure as possible. If you wanted to extend the agent, that can be done. If you would like some advice/help, I'd be happy to talk.

Best Regards,
Will Sobel

Dear Will,

I am doing research on MTConnect possibilities. I am working in the field of technologies related to so called "Industry 4.0". Our aim is to provide (among the others) interoperability within the shop floor. MTConnect as an open standard for semantic data exchange is very interesting from our point of view. Still, we base on Service Oriented Architecture and I would like to find out if it is possible to adapt MTConnect to this kind of architecture.

I am extremely interested in integration of MTConnect and OPC UA. I have already written a question in the other topic - so far without any answer. I would be very grateful if you could give me any tip, how can MTConnect be integrated with OPC UA. Are there any implemented solutions?
