I'm thinking about working on a Python agent for MTConnect. Anyone else interested or want to collaborate?

My python is pretty weak, only done a small toolkit for an MTConnect client to help out SwRI, but I would be happy to answer any MTConnect agent related issues or review your design. I'd even try to help... and not harm. Are you doing something with MTConnect right now? Do you have a specific use in mind?

Best,
- Will Sobel.

Will,

Yeah I'm thinking maybe for Raspberry Pi. I think it could be another group of developers that could be reached; they may want to get involved in MTConnect if there was a simple open source agent available. I connected a Raspberry Pi to my Makerbot 3D printer and can now print via the web to the Makerbot, but I thought it would be cool to monitor it via MTConnect, have the adapter/agent all in one on the Raspberry Pi, not sure how the performance would be, but anyway. Just something I was thinking about. Thanks

Joel,

Sounds like a good project. It would be great to have additional languages out there. I'd be happy to help on getting it working.

Btw. I think the C++ agent will cross compile to the Pi, but I have cross compiled to an embedded debian for the Alekto OpenRISK platform. Hooked up an Arduino as an adapter via Serial and for a science fair project. Worked great. We've also used Alekto's for collecting data from high speed power meters.

Cool! Yeah Arduino adapter would be cool too! Using the C++ maybe better for the Raspberry Pi as well, but it would be good to get another language like Python going for MTConnect too. I'll start putting something together and let you know.

Thanks!

RE: Arduino, I'll pull off what I did for the science fair. Did a simple Steinhart-Hart calibration on the temp and then output data from the serial port. Then wrote a little script to send data to a socket on the alekto and the agent did the rest. Pretty simple stuff. I'll check what the Pi toolchain look like and see if I can setup a build.

What about a git-repository for the Python Agent (like the _upcoming_ java-sdk)?

Arne, yeah I'm sure Will can get one going. I hope to have some time to work on a very basic Python agent soon. Thanks

I'm late to the conversation, but I can verify that the C++ agent runs on the Raspberry Pi. We had it installed on a Pi Raspbian image at MC[2] this past spring. The cppagent wasn't cross-compiled, though; I installed the build tools and then kicked off the build on the Pi (and then went to lunch).

For the same demo I coded a simple adapter in Python, but my Python skills are so weak that afterward I rewrote it in C#. Nonetheless, if anyone is working on a Python implementation, I'd be willing to contribute in whatever minor way I can.

Phil,

Sounds great! Yes, maybe we can have a git repository soon for the Python agent. Then we can share code and start off with the basics.
